I was looking for a kick start to spring - getting the yard trimmed, cleaned and essentially refreshed before things start blooming and growing. Patrick Keen and his team were amazing - actually trimming what I have long thought were unruly bushes into lovely trees! Who knew!?!?!? It is a delight coming home to look at the yard, and we haven't even seen the spring blossoms yet. I would 100% recommend this company.

Pat Keen with Jim's mowing and his team did a great job on my property. The deck got a major clean and looks better than ever and they used manpower as strata didn't allow power washing. The lawn got a total re-level, re-soil and re-seed and looks great. The river rocks in the shady part of the yard tie it all together and provided a final fix to a tough space to landscape. Thank you for everything, Pat & team.

My lawn was in desperate need of a trim. With all the rain and my schedule it got away from me.I contacted Jim's Mowing for a quote on a one time cut and a reoccurring service. I was contacted by CHRIS THOMSON from Abbotsford with a reasonable quote and an offer to get it done that same day.It took him a couple hours and multiple trips with all the clippings but I was greatly satisfied with the result which was well worth the price and will end up being cheaper than buying a new mower myself.I look forward to having Chris back for the rest of the season.

Patrick Keen and his team did a completely professional job in getting our yard and garden areas cleaned up, trimmed, mulched, mowed, pressure washed and ready for the coming good weather. I could not be more pleased with Patrick’s work and professional approach.

To Aerate or Not To Aerate?

Here in British Columbia, if you care about your lawn, you’ll know that creating a beautiful, lush yard takes a bit of work. Some of the more regular tasks, like a lime and fertilizer treatment, require less effort and time, but there are also very important annual or bi-annual tasks for making your lawn thrive. For today, we’ll be covering aeration, what it does, why you should do it, and when to do it in British Columbia.

Over time, your yard might get compacted by various things. In British Columbia, you might like to host parties, or perhaps you have kids or pets that trample over your lawn regularly, or perhaps you’ve noticed water beginning to pool in certain areas. Consider an aeration. These all could be reasons to freshen up your turf with an aeration.

What is lawn aeration and why should I do it?

In British Columbia, the heavy rains can lead to soil compaction as the pooling of water compresses the soil. Core aeration, the most common type, uses a machine that removes cylindrical chunks of soil from your lawn that are several inches deep. By penetrating through and perforating your lawn, you’re allowing the roots of your grass to get better access to the essentials like air, water, and nutrients. Not only will this give your grass better access to what it needs, but by removing cores, it also helps uncompact soil as it fills itself out over time. Aeration can also help with thatch and is a helpful first step if your thatch problem is out of control. It will penetrate through the thatch which will remove some of it and open it up to allow nutrients to hit your lawns roots. Another benefit to core aeration is that you should leave your cores on the lawn to decompose and do not have to remove it. In British Columbia, these cores will break down before your next mow and you can simply mow over what remains. Doing this will convert the cores into needed nutrients for your soil.

If you notice your lawn is pooling in certain areas, as is common in British Columbia, this is a clear sign that your lawn wants an aeration. When the soil is very compact, water can’t penetrate it and this is what causes the pooling. When you aerate it, it loosens up the compacted soil and will eliminate the pooling over time. Aside from this, you should aerate your lawn simply because it gives optimal access to nutrients, air and water for your turf’s roots. If you fertilize or water directly after an aeration, these essentials for your lawn will hit the roots instantly, promoting the fastest and healthiest growth. Even with our fast growing seasons here in British Columbia.

When to aerate?

So now that we know what an aeration does and why you should do it, you’re probably wondering when you should do it. Well this depends on what climate you’re in, but here in British Columbia with our cooler climates, the best time would be early spring after the growing season has picked up or early fall, before the grass has stopped growing. For warmer climates outside of British Columbia, you’ll probably be looking at late spring/early summer. The most important thing here is that it must be during the growing season so that your lawn grows fast enough to heal itself.

Caring for your lawn can be time consuming and overwhelming. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it by yourself. Jim’s Mowing franchisees across British Columbia are eager to help you achieve the best lawn possible. When spring comes and the grass starts growing, you can count on Jim’s Mowing to provide you a professional aeration, or for any other gardening or lawn care services.
