I was looking for a kick start to spring - getting the yard trimmed, cleaned and essentially refreshed before things start blooming and growing. Patrick Keen and his team were amazing - actually trimming what I have long thought were unruly bushes into lovely trees! Who knew!?!?!? It is a delight coming home to look at the yard, and we haven't even seen the spring blossoms yet. I would 100% recommend this company.

Pat Keen with Jim's mowing and his team did a great job on my property. The deck got a major clean and looks better than ever and they used manpower as strata didn't allow power washing. The lawn got a total re-level, re-soil and re-seed and looks great. The river rocks in the shady part of the yard tie it all together and provided a final fix to a tough space to landscape. Thank you for everything, Pat & team.

My lawn was in desperate need of a trim. With all the rain and my schedule it got away from me.I contacted Jim's Mowing for a quote on a one time cut and a reoccurring service. I was contacted by CHRIS THOMSON from Abbotsford with a reasonable quote and an offer to get it done that same day.It took him a couple hours and multiple trips with all the clippings but I was greatly satisfied with the result which was well worth the price and will end up being cheaper than buying a new mower myself.I look forward to having Chris back for the rest of the season.

Patrick Keen and his team did a completely professional job in getting our yard and garden areas cleaned up, trimmed, mulched, mowed, pressure washed and ready for the coming good weather. I could not be more pleased with Patrick’s work and professional approach.

As Spring approaches here in British Columbia, the last thought on your mind is probably to prep your yard in early spring after that last frost. It’s still cold out, why would you want to face your unruly garden in sub 10° weather? Fortunately for you, our Jim’s Mowing Franchisees will be active and operating early enough for you to stay inside the warmth and comfort of your own home while still achieving a beautiful look for your home yard.

But why do I need a spring cleanup for my yard?

Well, aside from the elation that a beautiful garden, lush green lawn, and manicured trees can bring you, a proper spring cleanup will help clear winter debris and clutter that might have built up, as well as create a healthy environment that is optimal to promote a robust ecosystem for your yard. Here in British Columbia, the winter can bring with it a ton of debris that will need to be cleared up to give your garden a healthy start to the season.

So what should you focus on?

Here is a general guide for what to look for in your spring cleanups.

Grass in a spring cleanup

Being the centerpiece of your yard, the health of this is crucial to having a presentable home and a successful spring cleanup. Here in British Columbia, can be damage that has accumulated during the winter, so your lawn might need a face lift.

If wildlife (or your kids, if that isn’t the same thing) caused heavy traffic over certain areas of your lawn, you can use topsoil, grass seed and fertilizer to spot-heal these areas. You should also remove any debris that has accumulated over the winter that can create bare spots. Lastly, at Jim’s Mowing British Columbia we would recommend a fertilizer and lime treatment for the whole lawn. Fertilizer is your lawn food to help your grass grow as strong as possible. Lime helps with your lawns pH levels if your lawn is more acidic.

When it is below a certain pH level, the acidity of your lawn prevents it from accessing the nutrients from your fertilizer, and with such heavy rainfalls here in British Columbia, your lawn can become too acidic fairly quickly. Basically, your results will not even be half as good without the lime treatment as your lawn might be too acidic to receive any benefit from the fertilizer. If you do these steps for your spring cleanup, you’ll be on your way to having a lawn your neighbors will drool for.

Perennials

In British Columbia, perennial hedges are bountiful! Perennials are plants that live more than two years. This means we’re talking about your trees, shrubs, and other large plants in your garden. So what do you need to look for during a spring cleanup of your perennials.

First, you’ll want to remove any dead, dying or diseased branches. This will eliminate visual clutter, as well as enable the tree to get more light and distribute water and nutrients from the soil more easily to the live branches. Second, you’ll want to lift or remove any branches that are obstructing pathways, laneways and roadways. This will not only protect passersby from walking into branches, but it will protect you from getting a complaint from your city.

You’ll mostly be looking to clear back dead debris, or in the case of smaller perennials, you will be cutting them back to reset them for new spring growth.

Spring Cleanup: Gardening

As with the other categories thus far, your garden will have accumulated dead debris and clutter throughout the winter, especially here in British Columbia. Be sure you don’t start a spring cleanup of your gardens before the ground has thawed, but when you do you’ll want to remove the leaves, branches, or other foliage that remains.

You’ll also want to pull all of the weeds out to clear the soil fully. Flowers won’t grow without enough space so to ensure that your flowers don’t get suffocated this spring, call your local Jim and have them remove all unwanted clutter, pull the unruly weeds, and clear that needed space to give your flowers the best chance to bloom!

Walkways & Patios

Here in British Columbia, there’s enough debris falling down to make pathway clearing a weekly job. Your patios and walkways will probably be where you see your yard from the most, but if these areas are dirty, it might make it tough to appreciate the fine work that has been done to your yard already. In order to avoid this during your spring cleanup, you’ll want to make sure you get your furniture cleaned, look at and remove the mold and mildew that has grown on anything, and perhaps you’ll want to get all of your pathways pressure washed to get that truly clean look. Jim’s Mowing British Columbia can certainly help you with this too as most franchisees offer pressure washing services.

So keep an eye out for that last frost and have our number ready. Here in British Columbia, our Jim’s family is eager to help you achieve your dream yard so don’t hesitate to reach out for your annual spring cleanup!
